Tim Cook, CEO of Apple has announced his agreement with Qualcomm earlier Tuesday. This was unexpected because of their disputes in licensing back in 2017.
Apple and Qualcomm have been battling over their license fees for two years. Now, the battle ends sweetly with their surprising agreement of multilayer chipset supply.
Qualcomm supplied modems for iPhones until the dispute in 2017. Then iPhones switched to Intel chips. The latest iPhones XS, XS Max, and XR use Intel chips only. It looks like Tim Cook doubted Intel’s ability to provide 5G smartphone modems within 2020 or even 2021. Intel has also declared its withdrawal from 5G smartphone business as anticipated. Agreeing to this Creative Strategie’s Milanesi says, “This probably signals Intel was going to be late and too late. It also could signal Apple couldn’t do it on its own in time.”
The incredibly fast Qualcomm chips in iPhones is a pure delight to customers. With this agreement, Apple is certain to unleash 5G iPhones sooner than expected.
