WebP is a new image format developed by Google in 2010. WebP uses both lossless and lossy compression formats, it utilizes the technology that Google purchased from On2 technologies. In the first place, it was created as an advancement to the jpg, png, and gif image formats.
WebP uses advanced compression technology to produce much smaller file sizes while maintaining similar image quality. Therefore, WebP images used on the website lead to faster loading of the images.
WebP vs Jpg
As evident from the above table WebP supports lossy and lossless compression, and also transparency and animation. Even with these features WebP lossy images are around 30% smaller than JPGs and WebP lossless images were on average 25% smaller than PNG.
But Jpg also takes the lead sometimes, Jpg images are ideal for high-quality image output and help to achieve dense image details, it can be used where clarity is essential. Also, currently Jpeg files are considered as a standard for online images and are used mostly.
Also, WebP is only available for chrome and opera for now and is not fully optimized for usage with Safari and Firefox so Jpg can be a better alternative. Moreover, WordPress also does not support web image format so this makes jpg a better choice.
